Benefits and Work: What Are My Options?

One great concern, when returning to work, is the fear of losing benefits or being disqualified. This section contains information to help you make informed decisions.

Before you start, gather information on your network of benefits so you can complete the Benefits Checklist. Involve your case manager, partner, or friend as you review your benefits and how those systems operate.

Before you leap and make any major changes, ask questions and review several possible scenarios. The more informed you are, the better you will be able to get services and assistance you need.

Questions to ask yourself:
  • Do I want to work and keep most of my benefits?
  • What are the income eligibility requirements of each of my benefit programs, especially Social Security?
  • If I change my income level, what are my options?
  • What happens if I get sick again and can't work?
