Laws that Protect You

It is illegal to discriminate against a person on the basis of a disabling condition. People's ignorance about HIV, however, may get expressed as prejudice and employment discrimination. Fear and concern about possible discrimination or loss of benefits has caused some PLWAs not to seek employment or to stay in their current job rather than disclose their HIV status in a new workplace.

The material in this section is a summary of complex laws and is not intended to serve as legal advice. Keep in mind that laws are subject to change and legal interpretation. If you think you have been discriminated against and want to seek legal remedy, discuss the matter with your case manager and consider consulting an attorney.
