About Us

The project is inspired by the ancient myth of the Phoenix
rising out of the ashes of death and transforming into a new life, representing the endless cycle of death and rebirth. Many of us, though unfortunately not all, are rising out of the ashes of AIDS, transformed, and trusting life again. This symbolism may seem dramatic or unfamiliar to people recently diagnosed, but for many long-term survivors it may seem poignantly real and familiar.

The Phoenix Rising HIV/AIDS Re-entry project was created in 1997 when HIV/AIDS shifted, for many, from a terminal to a chronic illness and many people living with AIDS (PLWAs) were feeling better and able to prepare to live rather than to die.

At that time, focus groups were held to identify the issues and challenges PLWAs were experiencing as they began to explore what to do with their lives. This uncertain and awkward place influenced the content and format of the Phoenix Rising HIV/AIDS Re-entry Resource Guide. It is written by and for PLWAs and offers you, the reader, opportunities to assess your situation and to evaluate strategies, resources, and action plans to help guide you through the re-entry process.
